I've got a 2001 base 5-speed. In my case, I took off the large rubber air duct from the air filter to the turbo. Look in the turbo, actually into the aluminum elbow that turns downwards into the elbow. On top of that elbow there's a line with a banjo fitting - it's part of the crankcase vent system.
On mine that vent line had some oil coming thru. The oil would go thru the turbo & collect in the rubber hose leading to the intercooler. Occassionally some oil would get pulled into the engine making a puff of smoke at startup.
I don't want to say you're safe, & I don't want to discourage you from inspecting your turbo bearings or headgasket, but check to see if it's this simple situation. Maybe you only need to have the most up-to-date vent system modification. (Rev 6 or whatever??)
