When the upper two PCV hoses crack (and they do) it will let out hot oil fumes into the engine compartment.
Some of those fumes will seep through the rubber seal between hood and engine compartment.
Right below windshield is the fresh air intake and the fumes will go right into that air intake and into the car.
Even a leaking oil pressure switch will dribble oil onto the hot catalytic converter, and that smell will also get into the car.
