Coldshot's right about the timing chain.
But the external drive belt (serpentine belt) has an idler pulley or 2 that has been known to fail. This takes out your waterpump, among other things, so some people pre-emptively replace the idler pulley when they replace the belt.
Your '96 has a different belt routing than my 2001, but check out posts about the idler. Also look for 'short belt mod' because I think you can do without one of your idler pulleys.
And don't ignore the noises when the pulley starts going bad. If you lose your alternator & PS pump, don't think you can limp home on battery power. Remember that you just lost your waterpump too.
