2000 9-3 sedan base model, auto tranny, 95,000 miles.
My saab has had blue smoke on startup for over a year, and what with the known potential for sludge in these engines, I have started an Auto-Rx treatment. My plan is to do two consecutive treatments. I did not remove the valve cover to check for sludge prior to doing this.
I just finished the first rinse cycle, in which I used Valvoline 10W-30 conventional oil and a mobil 1 filter. The oil was black as night and had what appeared to me to be carbonaceous grit in it. I cut open the filter and it also had grit.
I put in some clean volvoline 10W-30 and a new mobil 1 filter and will rinse for another 1500 miles.
The big news is that the blue smoke at startup is completely gone. Who knows if that is just temporary or indeed if things will ultimately be worse for freeing up all that grit and grime. For now, though, I have to say that things are looking good.
