Hi,

I've got a similar-sounding problem, and here's what a 'big car-guy' friend told me.

I've got a popping sound that sounds almost like a semi performing engine-braking. In my case, the problem occurred after I switched to winter tires, and I had unbolted and bolted the wheels with the front tires lifted up, holding the entire drivetrain at an unusual angle.

His guess was that the noise might be from the joining of the 1/2 shaft to the wheel, that it is not sitting properly and 'clicking' back into place like a joint (for me, it's my wrist). This could potentially be a half-shaft issue, but I haven't gotten it figured out yet either.

If you listen closely, I assume that the noise is speed dependent, and not engine speed dependent, right? That would seem to 'prove' that it's between the output of the transmission (ie not clutch or gears) and the wheels. Just something to help narrow it down.

I'll let you know if I figure out anything more. Best of luck
