I was hunting for the best way to do a timing belt on my new addition to the stable 95 900 2.5l V6) without having to use the SAAB tools. When I came across this post from Anders. I have to say Anders, Perfectly explained! 2.5hrs from start to finish, and all is better in the universe.

when getting the timing belt aligned (a little bit here, a little bit there,a silly song and a stick of dynamite). LOL
It's a lot of different procedures and the use of special tools, so it makes it difficult to explain from my way of doing it, to the way of a DIY without the special tools.
When starting from scratch, I always align the lower idler pulley pointing toward water pump (you know how the idler pulleys are on an excenter bolt). The upper idler pulley pointing toward 1-2 cyl sprocket and the tensioner pulley loosened. Camshafts and crank at TDC.
This is the basic setting.
I start with hooking the belt around crank shaft sprocket and insert a wedge on the left side of crank, squeezing the belt tight to the sprocket.
Route the belt over lower idler, cam 4, cam 3, upper idler, cam 2, cam 1 and lastly over tensioner.
I preset the tensioner to about the right amount and rotate the engine one reveloution. Than I check so the the 1-2 cams are aligned with 3-4 cam, if not, I use the upper excenter idler to set the two pair of cams to each other.
Rotate the engine another reveloution and check the 4 cams alignment toward the crankshaft. If I need to adjust, I use the lower excentric idler to move all camshafts compared to crank shaft.
When all 5 shafts are aligned properly, I fine adjust the tensioner.
Next I install the crank pulley, hook the airmassmeter up and start the engine (to verify that the tensioner are set properly) It's quite a big difference on how the tensioner is working when rotating the engine by hand compared to when it's running.
Hope this help, otherwise send me an E-mail with your address and I send you a stick of dynamite (and a silly song)
Cheers
Anders "
