Yesterday I put the top down on my 99 9-3 and went to the hardware store. When I came out to the parking lot, I noticed some black crap on the soft top toneau cover. When I went to wipe it off, I saw that it was all over the top of the rear passenger seat, and a trail of it ran down the side panel into the rear passenger seat. It looks a lot like a mixture of sawdust, roofing tar, and grease. At first I thought that some A-hole contractor had hurled the stuff out of the back of his truck. Trying to wipe it up caused a real ugly sticky mess. I vacuumed up as much as I could, and then used a leather cleaner to get the ugly black residue off of everything.
Then I went to put the top up... and just before the toneau cover was about to go down into place, I noticed a bunch of that black crap pouring out of a corner of the headliner. Arrrrgggghhhhh.... I stopped the roof in that position and went to take a look. There is a hole in the headliner material in the lower left rear corner, where all this crap is pouring out. I used my shop vac to remove as much of it as I could. Then I got out the leather cleaner, and cleaned that crap off the seats again. I went and looked at the drivers side... the headliner is loaded with the same gunky junk, but at least it's not pouring out onto the upholstery.
What the hell is that crap? Why is it there? And what are those short stainless steel cables that aren't connected to anything, but are just dangling there? I can't find anywhere that they would have been connected to, and they are disconnected on both sides.
