It is always a possibility that a part is bad out of the box, that's why most shops leave 12 month/12K miles warranty so in your case it shouldn't be a problem.
Also, if the drive shaft nut is not torqued down good enough, it could damage the bearing. It is less likely that the drive shaft nut is torqued too hard since that would take a lot to do.
It also only take a hard hit into a pot hole or curb to damage a bearing so that is possible too.
So let's say that a bearing have held up for more than a year or 12K miles, it is less likely that the bearing was bad out of the box or that the mechanic did something wrong but more likely an driver error.
