I've always filled up my '01 9-3 SE with Unocal 76 91 Octane gas. Due to the increased price in gas, I decided to switch to Midgrade 89 the night before I was to take a trip to Los Angeles from San Diego. The morning of the trip, I drove a 1/2 mile and the car lost acceleration ability and the rpm slowly dipped to zero. There was no CEL light on. I was still able to pull over to the side of the road since I haven't yet reached the freeway onramp. I popped the hood and didn't smell anything unusual. I removed the cable from the battery positive battery terminal. After 2 minutes I remounted the battery cable terminal and the car started just fine. Everything seemed normal and I was able to drive the car. Thinking I was on my way with no more problems, I drive to Los Angeles and half way there driving on the interstate, the rpm's dip once again and as I step on the throttle, I get no acceleration. However, the radio was still on and the ACC was ON. No CEL light. If my battery was bad then all of the electrical components would die out too right? Luckily driving on the right most lane and able to pull over safely. Then I did the same thing again: removed the positive battery terminal, remounted after two minutes, started the engine and voila. Stepped on the accelerator a bit and I was able to rev the engine. This time I drove the car the rest of the way to Los Angeles and back to San Diego in SPORT MODE and it never happened again. I was still able to manage getting 33 MPG. Would my problem contribute to the bad gas and the sudden octane change?? Please advise.
