2000 Base Model 9-3 Sedan, automatic, 99,500 miles

I have completed the first clean cycle, the first rinse cycle, the second rinse cycle, the second clean cycle, and I'm into the third rinse cycle (i.e., the first rinse of the second clean).

I have been using valvoline conventional 10W-30, although I normally use Mobil 1 0W-40.

You may recall that I have had gradually worsening blue smoke issues since about 50k miles. The blue smoke disappeared entirely toward the end of the fist rinse cycle. It stayed gone until I started the second clean cycle, which I kind of expected. I assume it will go away again as I make it further into the rinse cycles.

Unfortunately, I started hearing a soft howling noise on cold startups. This started about the middle of the second clean cycle.

I thought it was probably the idler puller, so I replaced that and I replaced the entire tensioner assembly for good meaasure. The howling was unaffected.

So then I figured that the auto-rx had loosened enough hard coke grit (as opposed to sludgie goo) to clog the oil pickup screen and that the oil pump was whining as it tried to pull cold oil across the screen.

So I scheduled an oil pan drop/cleaning with my indy. ($400 btw) I just got word from him that the oil pan did have some debris in it, but it wasn't that bad. He took some pictures, but I haven't seen them yet.

SO it's good news/bad news. I still need to track down the howling noise, but I don't have terrible sludge issues and the pan and screen have now been cleaned.

Maybe it's the water pump??
