Just want to follow up for Jeremy and Seth and those who have helped me with this thread. As we left it, the dealer told me that the phone system had been "hacked" and they were not interested in trying to eliminate the "Phone Mute" error and restore my stereo.
Hacked, hmmm. When you have been hacked, what you need is a hacker to fix it! And it just so happens there is a spliff-smokin' Caribbean car-audio shop just around the corner.
They were totally professional, concerned, and absolutely confident they could fix it -- came right out to the parking lot with a meter and strippers to fix it.
The verdict? Mon, I can't find the short from here. Bring it back tomorrow and leave it for two hours and I can fix this for $30, tops.
So I get there in the morning, and having thought about it, tell the guy, if you can make the stereo work again, maybe we can further upgrade it. I'm leaving for a road trip in this car and want the stereo louder with the top down. Maybe replace the door speakers with something newer and put a sub in the trunk.
He said, No Mon, this car has good amp and speakers, just upgrade the head is all you need to do.
So for $200, they completely went around the original phone muting problem by pulling the old stereo and installing an Eclipse CD1200 player with USB port and all sorts of other good stuff. Sounds great, less filling, just love it. And now my 80-gig music collection is within reach!
But will I pay for this later? How does it interface with the radio antenna motor? The CD changer in the trunk is now said to be obsolete, but it doesn't want to cough up a couple of my choice discs, though I think the power is still connected.
Wow, I never thought that owning a Saab would be so much like computer hacking. But with the top down, the sun shining, and some tunes cranking, it really is worth it.
I also now have available for sale or trade the cd/tape/radio unit from 97
900 SE Turbo Convertible with code. Maybe I should keep it for posterity, or I could just contribute it to this group's restoration efforts.
Thanks much for all the tech support,
Snowshoe
