Hi All,
I have some boost issues with my 02 vig. I haven’t really investigated anything yet but thought I’d collect some thoughts on possible things to check.
Problems started first day of a road trip last Thursday. I was passing with close to full boost, when I backed off there was a pop/bang and the engine started to miss and eventually stalled. A quick search on the side of the road I discovered the intake hose had blown off the throttle body due to what a guessed was a somewhat loose clamp, probably from installing the PCV #6 upgrade a few weeks early. I re-installed and re-started, the car idled fine and I was off and running. At this point I thought I noticed a subtle delay in boost but couldn’t really determine if I was just over analyzing things. Apart from that the car was fine. The next morning when I pulled out onto the hy-way there was a metal on metal “ting ting ting” sound under acceleration and maybe a lack of boost when the car was cool (not stone cold, just not at normal temp). No noise under moderate accelaration. At normal temperature everything was fine. On the way back yesterday there was the same “ting ting ting” when cool but again it went away. However, now the boost is inconsistent. It seems okay if a roll the throttle on slowly but a quick burst yields little to no boost or some and then no boost.
I intend to give it a good once over, check the turbo end play and the mass air flow. I can’t help but think that the “ting ting ting” is a turbo impeller hitting the housing but the repetition seems slower than I would have guessed for that happening. Maybe it’s floating back and forth (bouncing of the housing) ??

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

PS there is no smoke on accell or decell and no other strange noises. The car has seemed a little more throaty since I installed the PCV #6 but I been over it a couple of times, no vacuum leaks etc. Pan was off 1,500 km’s ago, no sludge.

Thanks,
Roco
