You might want to pull a vacuum on that system with a good AC vacuum pump for a good 45 minutes, and then refill. You can borrow a professional grade one as well as the manifold gauges from Autozone with a $300 deposit, or around here at least.
Remember that you're probably trying to add refrigerant to a system that might already have its fill of refrigerant plus air or whatever.
