I'm in AZ with a collection of Saabs, no Viggen but I was having similar problems with a 9-5 2.3 (same basic engine). For about a year if I put my foot into it at all I'd hear frigtening detonation, at very light throttle openings there was no problem. Grade/brand of fuel helped a little but wouldn't solve the problem. Threw some expensive parts at it (MAF,DIC, Other) to no avail. I was completely stummped when I was looking around the engine one day (in front of the turbo) and noticed a plastic T-vacuum line fitting broken/cracked. This was off the BPC valve (three heavy rubber lines from radiator). I replaced the connector (down about a foot from the valve) - and the detonation completely went away.
I was shocked it could be so simple - yet so hard to find/detect. Could be worth a look to make sure all three of these lines are perfect.
Good Luck,
Scott
