These cables tend to bind over time, I believe the rubber seals at the back end leak and cables rust.
The issue is rarely with the shoes, usually the spreaders bind.
If you do replace the cable, beware the front adjuster / nut - it's on a lond stud (attached to the handle) corrosion may cause the stud to snap as the 1/2 nut is wound off, use care and clean the threads as well as you can!
