Removing Engine Endplate...easy?

1996 900SE 2.0 Turbo.
In trying to track down a mystery oil leak, it's looking like I will have to remove the endplate from the block.
1. Engine is still in the car
2. Transmission is not
3. Sump/oil pan is removed.
Can this be done without having to remove anything else? Does the starter have to be removed first? Will the end of the crank prove to be an obstacle?
Thanks
