close, but not quite re. leaks Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 11:14:30 In Reply to: Re: heater core, Saabnutt, Mon, 24 Nov 2008 21:17:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab designed the heater box so that heater core leaks are carried outside the cabin rather than dousing the feet of your passenger (which, yes, happened in my '67 Mustang). Your leak may indeed be due to a bad hose, but is most likely due to a failing o-ring between the hose and the core. In either case, the core has to come out as those o-rings, and the hose clamps, are on the cabin side of the firewall. Eeuroparts.com has a good picture on their site that may help you see how it's all put together. I had to do this job last year on my '01 SET, or rather had a shop do it. I think core, hoses and labor was in the $500 range, but can't recall exactly. If it's important to you I can look the receipt up this evening. FWIW, my '95 SET had 130k + miles on the original core when I got rid of it two months ago, but our '01 needed a new core at ~ 6 yrs/70k miles. Oh well.
