Odd Noise?

I have a 99 9-3 5pd. Recently [within the last week] it's been making an odd noise from the time it starts, through driving to when I shut it off. It's sort of a low grade hum [but sort of sounds like metal] which does NOT increase with speed, it stays consistent. Sounds as if it's in the front of the car [almost like underneath the car but in the dash area]
Last week at one point on the highway [getting up to speed] I went to shift into 5th gear, it was cold and didn't go right in, so I stepped off the clutch and pulled it back [to reclutch and try again] however, when I did my hand slipped [I have no idea how, freak accident] and it briefly wrenched to reverse [not fully in, slipped and hit the gear and could hear a grind]. I immediately let go of the shifter so it would return to neutral then stepped on the clutch and got it into 5th. This happened all in about a 5 second period.
I didn't notice the noise before this mishap but am wondering if they are even related. The car drives fine, and reverse is solid still.
Any ideas?
Also re: dash area, heater is a bit messed up but that makes a different noise of its own [need to replace the heater control arm].
Thanks guys!
