This started with what I thought as a simple bad alt. I had a warning chime and batt light while driving home from work. The next day I had the radio start going on and off, the heater fan going on and off just general electrical wierdness. Chimes and warnings. I threw a volt meter on the batt while the car was running there was no voltage being put out, a few days prior I had had the warning go off but when you reved it up to about 3k the warning went off and didnt come back on.

The cable was old and had some heat damage but checked out fine (.4 ohms resistance at the 200 ohm setting on the volt meter. I replaced it any way, just to be safe. I pulled the alt and took it 2 places it bench tested fine. I replaced the Voltage regulator because it was really warn. Put it all back together and all seemed fine.

I drove the car a few times and things seemed fine, yesterday I had all the weierdness that happened before happen again. I got home and there was just over 11 volts in the batt. I had 11.3 volts at the batt and with the ignition switch in the on possition I had about 10.5 at the exciter wire, I just checked it agian and I had about the same voltage at both the batt cable/alt conection and the exciter wire with the key in the on position.

Last night there was no batt light showing with the key in the on position prior to starting. After charging the batt over night the batt light is on with the key in the on position.

I have replaced the batt, positive batt cable, cleaned all the connections, replaced the voltage regulator.

The alt testet out good on the bench.

Is it possible the alt is still bad?

This is a 96 Saab 900 SET.
