If it was supposed to be worth $5,000 as a salvage I would peg it at $2,500. But a salvage vehicle can often be sold at the 80% level to an end user, as opposed to being taken in trade by a dealer, as an end user, or retail buyer maybe unaware of the exact meaning and a salvage vehicle may be the best alternative for a given amount of money. Also salvage vehicles have a tendency towards being lower miles (so much time in the body shop) as the Audi you describe. And many salvages also have fresh paint, again fresh out of the body shop.
An older salvage vehicle is also likely in a good cash range for a retail buyer, less than $10k, actually a salvage vehicle is unfinanceable, specifically excluded, under most auto lending programs.
