Always park so that you can pull out going forward. If you have to back up, the shoes just wind up tighter and tighter. If you have no choice but to back up, be sure not to try moving forward and getting up some speed - it won't work and you will loose your maneuvering room.

You can sometimes still get out if you swing the wheel hard to one side and back up - the stuck wheel will act like a tractor brake and the car will pivot on it. Works best with the car on ice and snow... and is a last resort for the day that you don't have a mallet with you.
