Is it missing fluid or just a message?
My two 1999s with 160K miles each were both giving me coolant warning messages intermittently. THey were never low on coolant however, I took them out and noticed that there was sludgy buildup on the float sensor magnetminside the expansion tank. The system works by a float connected to a magnet on the other end. When the tank is full the magnet presses against the side of the tank and triggers the sensor mounted on the outside of the tank, this way there is no hole in the tank.
I simply took a magnet to the magnet in the tank and cleaned off all the metal shavings (sludge) stuck to it. That was it....no more coolant warings on both cars! The metal shavings are attracted to the magnet and build up over time, this creates a gap increase for the float sensor and gives false readings.
Hope that helps someone save some money instead of buying a new expansion tank or sensor switch.
