On that old of a car it doesn't sound at all unreasonable to want to have a look at it first. The fact that the car has to spend all day at the dealer is SOP at a lot of busy dealers, so they can "work it in to the schedule" so to speak. You could probably pin them down to a morning or afternoon slot if you ask. Sounds to me like they are trying not to charge you a diagnosis fee in case you balk at the potential bill.
Quoting off the top of the head is one of the top reasons for customer dissatisfaction. Why go down that path on a 13 year old car with 125k that's prone to numerous serious problems regarding leaks near and around the cam belts.
Also it doesn't sound like you are a regular customer of this dealer to where the would be familiar with your car.
