If you ever had a cable break while away from home you can still drive. This is what I would do in my Post VW vans. Broken cable. 1st - turn engine of at a complete stop. 2nd - put the car in first gear and turn starter key. Car should go/move. To shift, to next gear, bring the rpm higher than normal and shift into next upper gear. Stay far away from everybody. Down shift will be done by coming out of the higher gear and into neutral and the revvev the engine a little and slip it into a lower gear. Stop lights and stop sign have to be done with engine off again and using the starter in first. You can practice at home without using the clutch, just don't grind the gears. VW vans had so much cables exposed to the elements that they were prone to breakage. You can get home without a clutch cable. I think we called it "Speed Shifting" If the transmission locked in reverse, your out of luck unless you can manually move the shifter/clutch arm.
