How come stock shocks never wear out?

My 2001 9-3 Base has 145,000 miles on it. Original shocks. The wrenches at the dealer keep telling me they are fine. They say that they almost never replace shocks on Saabs -- only if one gets broken. Very rare. That they tend to last the life of the car. My car feels just great, and it is stable at high speed cruising where it spends a lot of its time.
How?? How do they do it? Why is there not not internal mechanical wear?
In my earlier life, starting with cars two generations ago, it was dogma -- good dogma in my experience -- that ordinary OEM shocks were good to 30K, and at 50K one was a fool to have them still on the vehicle. Gas McPherson struts had a longer life, but no one ever suggested that they could go the life of the vehicle.
Thx.
