OK, this may be long, and it sure has been interesting so far...

First off, my name is Joey, and I am an independent tech in Scotia, NY. I specialize in Audis, and in issues no one else can track down. Of course, it is that second specialty that got me here today:)

The patient is a 1996 900SE Sedan, turbo, automatic. On occasion the owner would get a check gearbox/check engine light. When this happens the car would be inwhat I would call limp mode.. low HP, starts in a higher gear. Shutting the car off and restarting would reset the lights and the car would run fine. Also, when this was happening, the radio would shut off when the car was in park. Stepping on the brake would turn the radio back on. It has an aftermarket head unit.

The dealer could only replicate the issue once or twice. Since clearing the code "fixed" it, the shipped it. A few other shops played with it, with no success. It ended up with me.

Now, I have made a huge leap forward: I can break it more often:) Turning on the headlights via the switch will often cause the issue, and doing so actually shuts the headlights off, including the DRL's. When this happens I get a P0705, and the radio does it's thing. It will often "fix" itself while I am testing, and this fix, or reset, is random. It doesn't matter what part ofthe car I am poking at.

I found an earlier post here WRT this issue, but no resolution noted. Of course, I have an ego.. errrr, reputation to uphold, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
