Saab has always had a 2.0 turbo engine, in at least some markets. The Classic 900, the 9000 (until 1991), the NG 900/9-3 (except the Viggen), and the 9-3 SS/SC all used 2.0 turbos. The 9-3 SS/SC is a completely different engine from any that came before, as others pointed out. Even the 9-5 was sold with 2.0 liter LPT motors, at least early on (I drove one in Sweden).
The early cars: C900 & 9000, used the slant block 2.0 without balance shafts. The 9000 started the balance shaft motor as a 2.3 liter in 1990. That motor was the basis for the NG900/9-3 & 9-5 motors. The NG 900 & 9-3 used a de-stroked version to get 2.0 liters. The motor was also sold, I think, into some markets without the balance shafts. The 9-3 SS/SC uses the GM "Global 4" based motor, which Saab worked over pretty heavily, strengthening the bottom end, and also the 16v head.
