If you have the complete axle off the car, I always just slide the boot off the axle (towards where the end where the axle inserts into the tranny). No clip needs undoing. I have a three pronged gear puller that I used to pull off the tripod bearing. Once that is off, just slide the old boot off, and slide the new one on. I would use aerosole degreaser to clean out the cv joint and make sure there's no grit in it before packing with grease again. Once the boot is back on, a rubber mallot can be used to put the tripod bearing on again. I use tape on the tripod bearings to make sure the needle bearings don't comp out while pounding away.
