So...
my trusty 98 900S turbo coupe (117k miles) was just diagnosed as terminal my my trusty mechanic who i've been using for years.

i was getting an unpleasant thumping/bumping noise from the area of the driver's side front suspension going over bumps... braking... starts... etc.

he told me basically that the axle had come loose inside the transmission and the transmission needs replacement at great cost. (1000-2000 for parts, at least 9 or 10 hrs labor)

if that's true, i basically have to ditch the car. i'm not ready to put that kind of money into it... it's a shame, b/c the engine is strong, it has a new clutch, new brakes, etc. but still, this is the tipping point for me.

could it be anything else?

is there another, cheaper, way to fix it?

any other ideas/suggestions?
