2001 9-3 base auto, 116k miles
I thought I'd split this off from the other recent thread about cold start stalling issues. One of the things I wanted to check was the fuel pressure at the rail, to see if maybe a bad check valve was causing a pressure leak-down while the car sat.
Initially, when I first connected a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve, the pressure would spike when I turned the key on, then drop to zero over the next few seconds. Turns out the instructions for the gauge say to wrap the fittings with teflon plumber's tape to prevent leaks, and sure enough, there was a bit of gas seeping out.
I tried it again tonight with the tape, and this time pressure is maintained in the rail. However, the initial spike when the pump first runs is about 32psi, and then it drops to 25psi after the pump shuts off. When I start the car, it again jumps to 30-32 while cranking, then levels off at 25 during idle. Revving the engine makes it rise and fall a little, but it always hovers around 25. It also seems to hold steady at 25 for at least a few minutes after the car is shut off (I didn't have time to let it sit longer).
Assuming my gauge is accurate (which may be a big assumption), does this sound like a cause for concern? I thought the pressure should have been closer to 40psi, considering it's a 3.0 bar pressure regulator. The fuel pump is probably original, so is this a sign of it being worn out? It does buzz noticeably while running, which some say is normal but others say is worrisome (my previous 9-3 with 67k didn't sound like this).
I already bought a low-miles pump assembly from a junkyard just in case, but I'm not eager to do the swap anytime soon. I guess it would be better to do at my leisure than by the side of the road, though...
