I posted a few days ago my coolant magically changing color from green to clear. Those of you who called for a head gasket are probably right, as the coolant is now a disgusting yellow color -- looking rather like green coolant with some motor oil added. Engine oil, which is brand new mobil 1, is somewhat mocha but it is hard to tell since it it so new. (added the week before).
So, I'm looking at a head gasket job. What else can be done at the same time? The car is a 97 900SE. I'm the original owner, 125K miles. There is a slight noise coming from the timing chain area -- wouldn't call it chain slap but I can hear something when I put my ear on the valve cover. Car also needs work on the PS lines (seepy) and AC lines.
This is my list so far:
1. Head gasket
2. Thermostat (original)
3. Throttle body coolant hoses (original)
4. Turbo oil line and turbo stay (rusty, all original)
5. Maybe turbo oil line return hose (has lots of oil on it, don't know if there is a leak)
6. CPS
7. maybe water pump
8. maybe timing chain
I realize a lot of this stuff will depend on what happens once you open up the engine, but I am just trying to get a rough estimate of what I can do. Is is better to ask a shop just to take the engine out? Can you replace the timing chain guides with the head off, or is that an engine out procedure?
My budget is $2500; above that it starts to look cheaper to find a replacement car and deal with the depreciation.
Thanks for your thoughts on this memorial day.
