When changing brake pads, you should NEVER lose brake fluid. Not from near the wheels. If you used a clamp or other method to push in the caliper in order to fit the new pads, then maybe fluid has leaked from the master cylinder underhood. If you're losing brake fluid at the wheels when only changing pads, then you're doing it wrong. Best to have a friend help you bleed all four brake lines, starting with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder, moving finally to the wheel closest to the master cylinder. There is a definite correct process to bleeding brakes; if you don't know it, learn it first. Finally, if you have drum brakes on the rear instead of disc brakes, then leaking brake fluid is most likely from bad seals on the cylinder pistons. Replace them if there is any question. And if your brake pads got soaked with brake fluid, you might as well replace the pads again while you're under the car. Clean everything very well with brake cleaner: all metal braking surfaces. And the recommended break-in for new pads: the "30 at 30" rule. Stop from thirty miles per hour thirty times, some hard braking, some soft. Drive around the neighborhood for half an hour and you'll be good to go.
