It could be any number of things. I've had that error message twice (2003 SE convertible), the first time it was still under warranty and the dealer added hydraulic fluid which took care of the problem. The second time, I knew better, the top doesn't like being put up in my driveway (seriously up hill). I got it latched anyway and drove off but the message kept popping up as I exited stop signs before finally going away. The top was fine when I tried it again in the spring.

I can't tell you what your problem is and I doubt anybody can without reading out the error codes with a Tech II, which should pin down the problem. By the way, I operate the top without the engine running all the time without any problems. Your top has a hydraulic mechanism and I believe Tim's is his '95 which has a much more problematic electrically operated top.
