Hi all -
My project '95 900SE convertible project continues...I'm _this_ close to getting a sticker...needs swaybar endlinks (one SNAPPED), new (well, replacement) tires, and a few bulbs. E-brake cable, one control arm, rear rotors/pads, and a few other things done. Still to do maybe next winter: window separated from the top. Wanted to make sure mechanically the car would last before I tackle expense/time of DIY top repair/replacement.
So, I need tunes. The stock head unit has cruddy reception. Antenna bent, got replacement, not installing well. Probably going with the 15" whip instead.
Current situation:
-tape deck not functional...almost like there's no power, won't load cassette.
-CD changer doesn't like loading CDs, and if it does, they skip.
Needs:
-aux-in for iPod. I don't actually care about cassette or CDs...I want to at least use a cassette adapter.
-Audio quality not super-important. Some volume and sorta decent sounding for the summer car.
-I have two spare two channel amps available for use
-as little labor and cost as possible.
Possibilities:
1. get replacement stock HU off ebay for $50-100 and install. Have dealer
do whatever dealer voodoo is necessary to get codes/etc. Cost? Use cassette adapter for iPod.
2. New inexpensive head unit with aux-in, stock speakers. Harnesses available? How to bypass stock amp(s)?
3. New HU plus replace door speakers and add amp. I don't think I'd bother with the rears...doors alone should sound ok. Ebay or clearance HU and speakers.
I'm leary of putting a whizbang-looking HU in the car...for one, the stock looks better. Second, the top on this car never goes up when parked...it's wide open. I would have to learn to remove the faceplate, lock in glove box, etc. Not impossible, but...I'm lucky if I remember where my keys are.
So, dead deck...replace with same or improve?
Thanks!
