Agree - air in the system won't make it different from forward vs. reverse. I kinda missed that point.

Also, check you've put the anti-rattle spring in properly. Here's a photo. It's possible to put the very top & bottom of that spring on the WRONG side of those tabs. Then the spring tends to compress the caliper & you have to pump the brake pedal every time.

Unfortunately, the spring won't explain the forward vs. reverse behavior.
