I had a nasty intermittent problem similar to yours, where the AC compressor would randomly stop compressing. After a LONG period of repeated attempts, the shop finally traced the problem to a short in a wire under the air filter.

My car has an open air filter setup like the one Taliaferro offers. The baffle for the filter was sitting on top of some wires that tell the AC when to run, and it eventually rubbed enough to cause a short.

The problem was very difficult to diagnose, so I'd suggest that anyone who has such an open air filter setup should make sure that all the wires around it are routed safely.
