...It didn't even occur to me that you said your car is a '94. You should be able to send the system into diagnostic mode yourself; do you know if you have a Motronic or Trionic system? It looks like non-turbo models are Motronic.
For Trionic system, you can turn off the engine and turn the key all the way to the off position, then wait 3 seconds and turn the key to the on position; the check engine light will begin to flash, beginning with a 3second flash-short pause-3second flash, then the codes will begin flashing out with a 2 second pause between codes, and a 3 second flash indicating all codes have been displayed. Codes are as follows:
2 MAP sensor
3 Intake air temp sensor
4 Coolant temp sensor
5 Throttle position sensor
6 Lambda sensor (o2)
7 Adaptation fault
8 Evap loss system purge valve
9 ECU fault.
For the Motronic system you need to insert a jumper wire (10mm long) into pin 6 on the diagnostic connector with the engine off. Making sure not to allow the other end of the jumper wire touch a grounding point, turn the key on, then ground the wire for .5 - 4.5 seconds; at this point the check engine light will start to flash. Long flash indicates the code is about to be displayed. The codes will be displayed as two digits by a series of flashes - short pause - flashes, then a pause before displaying the next code, and will repeat itself after all the codes have been displayed. Codes are as follows:
11 Secondary air injection relay
12 No fault
21 Air mass flow sensor
41 Coolant temp sensor
51 Throttle position sensor
61 Lambda sensor
71 Long adaptation time
73 Short adaptation time
81 Evaporative loss system purge valve
91 ECU random access memory fault
92 ECU read only memory fault
This is right from pages 4A.8 and 4A.9 of my Haynes repair manual, I hope it helps.
