When I first moved to California in 1980 my roommate Charlie had two friends from NH who had recently moved out to LA too. 'Ken' had some NH beat up rust bucket and wanted a nice new car to go with his nice new life in LA so he traded the heap for a new Fiat convertible. I think the car was something like $19K, an unheard of price for a car in 1980. The dealer said he couldn't drive it off the lot unless he had proof of insurance so 'Ken' showed him some NH policy (which the genius had canceled the day before he bought the car).
Anyway, he was just going to drive home top down but decided to stop off for one celebratory drink first which turned into two which turned into several. Anyway, Ken and his buddy are driving north on Sepulveda Blvd past Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach (sorry, again, for the specific LA references) and about 1/5 mile past the intersection is a RR crossing for the Chevron refinery and tank farm.
Anyway, 'Ken' is looking to the right talking with his pal 'Rob' and Rob's saying, 'Train.... train.... train.... TRAAAIIIINNNNN!' Rob puts his eyes back on the road, blows through the crossing gate, and slams the brand new car into one of the drive wheels on the locomotive (which was going real slow because it was switching cars. No major injuries to Ken (beyond pride) and Rob but the Fiat was totaled. Frame damage, etc. Of course, his insurance company wouldn't pay because he had canceled the policy. We would laugh at Ken over the next few years as he was now making two car payments: one for the cool Fiat and one for the stripped Ford Fiesta (?) he had to drive bcause that's all he could afford after that. My bruddy Charlie used to love to tell that story...
So, a few years after that. Me and Charlie are driving in my Scirroco at night up to Monterey to hang out with family around 9 at night. Pitch dark, no one on the 101 but us, and Charlie's drifing off to sleep in the passenger seat. His head's nodding up and down as he's in that state where he's not quite out and he's not quite alert either. My dark side decided to goof on him so I yelled, 'TRAAAAIIIINNNN!!!' Took about 20 miles to scrape him out of the sunroof and get his heart rate back under 100.
