After replacing the head gasket twice in the past month and a half, milling the head for the heck of it (4/1000ths), and dye in the oil each time, but not anywhere on the exterior of the engine, I have determined that it is curtains for my 2001 5 door Base. It still looks great, one door ding, two small scratches, two scuffs on the rear skirt corners just this year and no visible rust. Runs great, well except for the little fact that it terminally sucks coolant into the block and contaminates the engine oil. (39 ounces in perhaps 1,900 miles.) Just about 152,000 miles on the clock. I love the car, especially for my regular long distance trips. But I am not up to doing an engine swap. I don't feel I can morally sell it to an individual, and its trade value is not worth thinking about -- honesty required there too. So, likely the next move is to explore what the parts resellers will pay for it.
I have no clue with what vehicle to replace it. Suggestions cheerfully accepted, but not likely followed. ;-)
For eight years Saabnet has been a fantastic resource. Everyone on it has been generous with their time, knowledge and experiences. My thanks to you, one and all, and to Scott for conceiving and maintaining such a civil and useful web site. I am grateful that I found it.
