You must exercise great care when bending the aluminum case. I believe that the retrofit kit (that you said was already installed) suggested using a bench vise. I improvised and used a pipe wrench instead. It does not take much movement to get these back in place, but excessive back and forth will cause the case to crack. Even after installing the retrofit kit, I still got gear slipping just about every year, turning this into an annual ritual. Frustrated, I looked for a better way.
Fitting the two halves together without the hinge pin installed so that you have maximum gear mesh will show how much bending that you would need to do to line things up. Using this technique, I convinced myself that I could get better gear contact by pushing out the removable gear, putting two hardware store washers behind the gear. This seats the gear in the "cup" of the receiving gear, causing a much stronger repair. So far, it has been working great!
