clutch cable info

'97 900s. ~80K mi. I've read here at length posts on the cable( breaks) and the conversion kit (which the local dealer also has no experience about).
Maybe my clutch cable might be stretched and also the lever pivot being gunked stiff. At "rest" the cable is NOT tight on the lever's seat/knotch and the throwout bearing is still chafing a little. Manually I can pull the lever forward about 1 inch -then no more noise.
If I then throw in the clutch, I get "alot" of chafing, and on release, I'm back to slight chafing. So I wonder if all I need is a new unstretched and properly spring loaded cable (NAPA) and some lever pivot cleaning/lube.
So before I go spend a small fortune on a clutch( I figure I should be good for 100~125K mi.), RMS et al,..... Is it typical of a NEW clutch cable to be "spring loaded" to PUSH forward the lever to totally relax the T/O bearing? Is it likely that the lever is somewhat gunked up and not fully relaxing? Thru the "bell dome window", I've read of using brake cleaner with a "spray tube" to try rinse the lever pivot and then aim some lithium spray at it...... and then do same for the throw out bearing.
Is it possible that my existing cable is stretched- its rather lose at the rest position -hence when "engaged fully" it may not fully clear and therefore I get the louder chafing noise on the throw out bearing???? I'm still able to shift - but I suspect this may not be the case shortly.
I'd appreciate any input on the topic.
