P0340 is a type III emissions fault. It has to fail 2 consecutive drive cycles in order to turn on the check engine light. So the first time it fails it doesn't set the check engine light. It just stores the fault in the control unit. If it fails agian on the next drive cycle, then the light will come on. If you drive pretty much the same way all the time (commuting, etc...) The 300 miles may be what it takes to get the failure during 2 consecutive drive cycles.
Here's what SAAB workshop information says about type III faults
Fault handling III, other emission-related components and function
A diagnostic trouble code is generated when the fault criteria have been fulfilled and any dependents are OK.
For the diagnostic trouble code to be cleared without any further measures being taken requires 1 driving cycle without the fault reoccurring. The CHECK ENGINE lamp goes on if the fault occurs during the next driving cycle.
For the CHECK ENGINE lamp to go out without any further measures being taken requires 3 consecutive driving cycles without the fault reoccurring.
For the diagnostic trouble code to be cleared requires a further 40 fault-free warming-up cycles.
