Often this is the neutral safety switch (i think that's the terminology...I forget). It sits on top of tranny. It get's gunked up.
Try to turn ignition on (not crank) and move the shifter through the range back and forth many times. This may fix it for a while. In the end though, if this is it, a new switch is needed.
