I don't think they actually measure the fuel composition; that's marketing-speak. I'm quite sure they measure engine operating variables, like exhaust O2 and especially knock.
As you know, Saab engines adjust their spark timing too, so that's basically a wash between engine types. Advancing spark timing is thermodynamically quite different from increasing compression ratio.
