Having two of these cars, what I've seen is the metal sleeving/mesh, which restrains the bellows (flexible part) typically corrodes and breaks. When that happens, the bellows part, which is fragile, will split at a seam. If the metal sleeving was already corroding, then a "bump" could have torn it, or someone "shaking" it during their...let's call it "inspection". Was the metal mesh rusted/broken?
But, per alldata.com (repair site), the list price for the intermediate pipe is $205 ($119.90 at eEuroparts.com), and standard repair time is 0.3 hours. It's very easy to fix, I've done it. Perillo Saab in Chicago has a ridiculous labor rate of, I think, $140/hour, so even at their rate, the repair should be $247 plus tax. Maybe add another $10 if they break the exhaust clamp bolts which tend to rust.
So...how are they getting $450??
