'94 900SE problem

Hello all, just a few questions! I am running a '94 900SET and the old girl is starting to have some issues. Out of the blue, the transmission stopped going in reverse, no warning... shifted perfectly, then one day I coudn't slide it into revere anymore. Also, the front end started making noise, and I drove it easy for a couple months that way, then took her to a shop---the mechanic told me I need both a-arms replaced in the front to the tune of $300 a piece, btw this is not a Saab shop, also, they weren't sure what is causing the problem with reverse. Any ideas folks? The car is in really nice shape (2-door, black, viking wheels)...so I'd like to fix her. Any pointers would be appreciated, Have a great day.
