I drive a 1998 Saab 900S, 2.3 liter, 4 cylinder engine. Last week when I went into Firstone to simply have my tires rotated, they accidentally put me down for an oil change (which I did NOT ask for as I do my own oil changes with Mobil 1 Synthetic...there's a reason why I mention this which I'll get to in a second). After having it out with the clerk who did not charge me for it, I immediately drove to Pep Boys (to get my Mobil 1 oil and Purolator filter) and back home and changed it to the oil that I normally use (no more than 8 miles total driven on that standard grade oil). Considering I had a good 1,200 miles left on my existing oil, this was a rather unnecessary hassle.

The past few days I had noticed my car running slightly a little more "rougher" especially when accelerating. It's not like it's vibrating violently or making any kind noticeably loud and unnatural growling sound. It's only when I accelerate (say from a complete stop or to move ahead and pass another vehicle) that the normal humming sound of my car accelarating sounds just a little louder and harder than usual. Once I'm cruising at a set speed (or coasting) she runs perfectly fine.

So I checked the oil (after my oil change to Mobil 1) and notice it's perfectly clean with a dark amber color. Ask I closely examined the end of my dipstick, I had also noticed a slight gasoline odor in my oil...no, it wasn't overpowering, and the oil appears to be as viscous as it should (it's not like it was thin and watery). I only notice it when I bring it straight to my nose.

I had never paid much attention to the odor of my oil whenever checking it in the past, so my question is whether this should be natural. If so, then I'm just a little paranoid and no further follow up is needed. However, if it is NOT....could this possibly be the result of running my car with standard grade oil (even for just 8 miles) that Firstone put in??? What could possibly be causing this slight gasoline odor in my motor oil? And is it something that can be easily rectified or is this a sign of a MAJOR and very EXPENSIVE repair in my very near future?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!
