I tried wiggling the inlet fitting loose after shooting it with some WD-40, as it looks like it just presses in with some O-rings like the pressure & return fittings on top of the pump. But it seemed to be held in there pretty good, so I didn't want to mess with it.
I went ahead and installed the replacement pump as-is. As you said, who knows...as long as it pumps, right? So far it does, so here's to peace of mind.
