My '99 9-3, 120K miles, has developed what I think is a transmission problem. When the car is cold, I'm driving and slow down to stop, the tach goes down to 4-500 rpm and the motor is shaking and occasionally stalls. If I put the car in neutral before I slow down, every thing is fine - the tach drops to 900 rpm and the motor idles smoothly. It feels like the car is stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear with the torque converter locked up as I stop - the motor feels like its fighting the tranny not to stall. I also notice that if I do the neutral shift thing before stopping, when I shift to drive, it takes a second or two to engage drive.
The fluid is at the proper level. I do a drain & fill every other oil change so the fluid looks quite clean. When the car warms up, (after 5 miles or so) the problem seems to go away. I've got no indicator lights alerting a problem. I'll take it to my indy mechanic this week to check for error codes. To rule out a DIC issue, I swapped out the cassette and it made no difference. Any ideas? TIA.
I was looking through the WIS manual for ideas. Is there a screen that can be cleaned on these trannies? Hopefully I've just got a weak sensor somewhere, but which one?
