I know it CAN be done. My local indy mechanic replaced my clutch cable, then told me he had some "hocus pocus" to break the code (the battery was removed for the clutch cable). He came up with the same number that was in my records.
If you happen to get locked out from bad codes, the way I unlocked mine was to leave the key on, and the radio turned on - to let the car shut down the radio after an hour, or so.
Not sure if leaving the key to "on" was critical, as the auto-off happens on its own anyway, but I think I remember removing the fuse for the headlights - to make sure I did't drain the battery.
